Hospitality and Golf Academy students at SCC

On Monday, January 19th, the Hospitality and Golf Academy students were hosted by Sandhills Community College. The Academy students gathered on their day off of school to learn about how to write a resume, how to apply and retain a job, and general information about the application and interview process. The class was led by Steve Gaddy and coorinated by Jenny Troyer. This highly informative class was important to the participants, as most of them are in the process of looking for employment.

Hospitality & Golf Academy Students Attend NC State Game

Moore County High School Hospitality and Golf Academy Students Attended the NC State Game on November 29, 2008.

CIS of Moore County Hospitality and Golf Academy students traveled to Raleigh for the NC State game against Miami. Students represented Pinecrest, North Moore & Union Pines high schools at the Wolfpack’s final home game of the season. Sponsors of the game included the NC State Wolfpack Organization and lunch was provided by Burger King of Cary. The CIS Hospitality and Golf Academy offers Moore County high school students an opportunity to explore employment opportunities in the hospitality and golf industries that surround our local area. The game was a perfect venue in which to promote higher education and reward the students for their hard volunteer work during the year. For more information about the CIS Academy, please contact Yvonne Petersen, Program Coordinator, at 910.295.1072.

Hospitality & Golf Academy news

First, an upcoming event for the Hospitality & Golf Academy participants:

Rally the Vote
Saturday, September 20, 2008
Raleigh, NC
Transportation, breakfast and lunch provided.
A chance to see the electoral process at work and listen to the candidates speeches.

Second, news about our recent events:

We started off the ’08-’09 school year with a Hail and Farewell at Pinehurst Marina, June 6, 2008. It was attended by graduating, returning and new students. A very big crowd enjoyed pizza and hamburgers cooked by our very own vegetarian chef, Dr. Moore. We recognized our Seniors and started off the new year with a bang!! We presented five (5) students with scholarships and all of our graduating seniors plan to attend college this fall.

We had one student attend Leadership Camp sponsored by SCC (thank you to Ted Mataxis for his support) at UNC Charlotte. This week long camp helped her refine her leadership skills and added immeasurable amounts of self confidence.

Fifteen (15) students participated in the CISNC Education Ball at the Progress Energy Center in Raleigh. Students enjoyed an overnight stay at NC State University dorms, toured Raleigh and participated in an off Broadway style musical ‘All That Jazz”. Dr. Robin Moore, Anna Harris and Andi Korte served as chaperones for the event.

June 11 and June 12th—2 day orientation held at Carolina Hotel and SCC. Here the students participated in tours and meaningful discussions about hospitality and its impact on our economy here in the Sandhills. This was a good introduction to the goals of our Academy. The highlight of the orientation was the Iron Chef competition organized by Peter Stilwell and Ted Oelfkee—a great time was had by all.

July 7-9 Moore County Entrepreneur Boot Camp—8 students attended. One of our students was the third place winner with her business plan for a day care. More importantly, one student found out how confident she really was when her entire Power Point presentation was lost and she had to improvise—she was wonderful!

July 23-30—18 students helped out at Carolina Hotel with a summer camp designed for the siblings of participants of the Kid’s Golf Tournament.

July 29-30—20 students participated in Parking Control at Pinehurst No. 2 in support of the Kid’s Golf Tournament.

July 30—14 students supported the Parade of Nations for the Kid’s Golf Tournament.

August 1-3 Stuff the Bus—Beautifully organized by Betsy Robinson, Kim Stout and Jan Powell, 22 students collected and organized school supplies and money for students of Moore County.

August 3—2 students and 1 honorary middle school student were standard flag bearers at the Kid’s Golf Tournament.

August 5—5 students helped count, sort and stack all of the school supplies in our storage area.

August 6—10 students had an opportunity to conquer their fear and fly! We graciously joined the Mentoring Students at Paraclete. It was magical and allowed them to experience something new and build some confidence! (Check out Paraclete’s website, see side bar.)

The H&G Academy volunteered about 450 hours this summer. This is astounding when you consider that we had to compete with vacations, band, church, and athletic camps and parents that were responsible for transportation to and from our events! They did a terrific job and we were so proud of them!

Thank you to all who worked so hard to provide opportunities for success for the students. Thank you to Peter Stilwelll, Dr. Robin Moore and Yvonne Petersen for all they give to the students and the program.

Career Education

—A marketable skill to use upon graduation

Students are eager to learn about the many different career fields available to them if they stay in school. CIS provices career fairs and ‘career connections’ to Moore County School students. Please call and volunteer to share your career field with our students…just one hour a week, once or twice a year.

  • Hospitality & Golf Career Academy (high school)—the academy creates a learning experience for students interested in the hospitality & golf industry—volunteers are needed to share their own career stories with interested students.
  • Career Connections—volunteers meet with individual classes at the request of the teacher and spend 30 minutes sharing their career field with the students.
  • Career Fairs are offered at all Moore County Elementary Schools to provide students with hands-on opportunities to explore many different careers.
